By: Travis Blythe The Drive for 75! Unless you have been under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you have been hearing this phrase on all of our social media accounts. If you haven't, then maybe you need to start coming to more workouts! Kidding...no, not really! Okay, okay, let me break it down for you. Most of you know we have been a November Project pledge for quite some time. In fact some might say way too long. But the struggle is real. Like really real. We have been doing our thing, promoting FREE fitness, changing peoples lives, and just plain ole "doing good" in our community. So it really was not a surprise when the powers that be started hearing our noise. Yes, they started taking notice that we now have three dedicated workouts a week, an unofficial track night, a race--sunrise 6k--that drew bigger number than most tribes, and yes, they hear our "FUCK YEAH'S" every week. With that being said, they stepped up with a proposed deal and we accepted. Here's the thing, in order for us to become an official NP Tribe, one of the challenges within the deal was to recruit over 75 people to a workout. No big deal right? I mean we have been fast approaching 55-60 every Wednesday. We certainly thought this was right up our ally. Challenge accepted. Now you see all of the #drivefor75 posts and more recently the piñata talk! So what is this exactly does this mean? The piñata is typically an object that is hung up while people take turns hitting it with a stick until all of the delicious goodies stored inside come spewing out on to the ground. But in our case, our "piñata" is a box filled with apparel which has been tagged with a new WRBD tag. We have several different brands of clothing, from female racer-back tanks to men's t-shirts. There are pink ones, red ones, blue ones, and white ones. Needless to say, we have an awesome hodge-podge of shirts inside our box. Come on, you know you want whats in our box. You know you do! So how do you get into our box? How do you get to slide your hands into this box? Well it is simple, tell your friends to come to a workout. Tell your parents, your neighbors, your co-workers, bring your kids, or whoever you want to bring. Just bring them!! #justshowup. Just show up, and when we get a minimum of 75 people at a workout, each person in attendance will get to slide there hand into our box and pick one goodie. From there you can barter, sell, or give away your awesome prize with another tribe member--or maybe you just want to put it on eBay, because the tag is going to be one of a kind--the most EPIC tag ever! So in the mean time, we will bring our box to every workout. You can look, but you cannot touch. Take a selfie with our box, post those pictures on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Make a video with our box. Basically, tell the world about our box. Tribe, this is your box...come and get it!

By: Travis Blythe Y'all good? HELL YEAH! Rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat...or are you? While our mantra is all about good vibes, sweaty hugs, and high fives, sometimes our lives are not that simple. People struggle with things we will never know or completely understand. Everyone has a transformation story. Sometimes we help transform others, sometimes we transform ourselves by the way of our mind or our body. Sometimes we transform both. About a month ago we had a new tribe member #justshowup. She was looking for more--for another avenue to push her limits. We hope she's found her forever home with us, as we welcome her with open arms. But before we get into everything, we need to know the why. Am I right? Isn't that the first thing we ask everyone? Why? Why did you...Well, it was the first thing I asked: Why start a journey? In order to answer that question, we must first travel back in time to that moment when you have that come to Jesus talk with yourself. You know the one--where you look in the mirror and curse, sometimes cry, but definitely say to that person looking back...fuck you! Yes this weeks Transformation Tuesday is a physical one to start, but is also proving to be a mental one. So let's set the stage, it's December 2014 and our tribe member breaks up with her significant other. This is not just a run of the mill break up, but one of those that sucks your soul out and makes you question everything. It was a painful time, and she came to the realization that not only was her relationship toxic, but so were the other parts her life. She wasn't living a healthy lifestyle. She had lost most of the passion for her job and the commute was sucking the life out of her daily. It is no wonder with all of these things compounding something obviously had to give. It did and she has not looked back since. "My main accountability partner is the mirror. If I wake up and feel good naked in the mirror then I know I had a good day the day before. If not, I know I need to make some improvements. She did what everyone does, pack up and move! After living in the northeast for 9 years, she decided to move back to Big D and start over, recharge, and regroup. But before we can fully get into the transformation, we must first know the struggle. The struggle is one that's been in place since early childhood. With a family history of obesity, weight has seemed to always be an issue. We know that going through life and trying to yo-yo isn't the healthiest or most practical way to live, but those methods helped in high school she when she did shed some weight--but the means to do so were not a sustainable method. Then college came and the freshman 15 turned into much more. The realization of staying busy is not the same thing as being active, finally hit home. So after looking in the mirror, she said to herself, enough is enough. Now back in Dallas, she knew everything had to change. The plan was set and instead of "dieting" she was going to change everything and begin living a new, healthy lifestyle. It started with cutting out alcohol and improving nutrition. Adult beverages and fast food were the first things she got rid of, and if out and about, she started having a juice/ smoothie or a vegan protein shake instead of stopping at a drive thru. The transformation was and continues to be an ongoing process. Her exercise began with walking and jogging in her neighborhood. She also added in senior citizen yoga at her rec center. Next, she joined Title Boxing where they gave her an awesome intro to HIIT workouts as well as boxing/kickboxing. Then, it finally happened. She hit the jackpot and found the mother of all workouts, WE RUN BIG D! "My cheat meal is always tex-mex but I split a meal with my mom and only eat half. We could not be happier to have her join our tribe. She wants accountability, and we are here to give it. Her goals are still to lose about 20 more lbs., get stronger, improve her 5k time (she had a goal of running a 5k without walking and has done it twice!) and train for a 10k. She follows fitness accounts for meal prep ideas or general inspiration to stay motivated. She has a 30 by 30 bucket list of things she wants to accomplish by her 30th birthday this December. Recently she went skinny dipping in the ocean for the first time in her life!
fun facts... Random facts about Meredith:
5 things you just need to know:
Last but certainly not least...Meredith won our Spirit Stick award last week! By: Ash Williams We’re all familiar with Rock, Paper, Scissors.
...or is it Paper, Rock, Scissors? Players are given three options in an interconnected system of choices and consequences. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, and paper beats rock. It’s good, ol’ fashioned, innocent fun. Or is it? The rock — blind, uncaring — reigns supreme, destroying everything through brute force. There is no morality, the only thing that matters to Rock is survival. ...Until Paper comes long. Paper is wizened, philosophical. Brute strength is fine, yes. But the higher good is wisdom. But the paper gets cocky. It loses sight of what brought it to the party in the first place. Hubris takes hold and blinds the paper to the more sinister elements within its own ranks. Wisdom and reflection give way to information and logic. A line is crossed where innovation gets so out of hand that technology begins to actively destroy the wisdom that created it. paper itself becomes weaponized. Now technology and its virtues are the highest good. Sure, technology seems innocent at first — wheels, hammers, pullies — Mankind values progress above all else, consequences be damned. So we hurdle blindly down the path of technology — the Next Big Thing at any cost. What’s next? Well, technological apocalypse. We finally develop a super technology that we must destroy, thereby learning our lesson. the rock smashes the scissors. The game, a closed, zero-sum system of morality, presents any choice you pick with its virtues and its drawbacks . On a small scale, it demonstrates that any decision you make has pros and cons. But on a much larger scale—it speaks to a deeper innate understanding of the human condition. At its heart, Rock, Paper, Scissors is much bleaker. At its heart it can be down right nihilistic. Enter WeRunBigD. Amid this battle for moral high ground WerunBigD walked out of the mist armed with a new weapon. This morning there was an alteration made to the age-old mix. What was it you ask? What was this game-changing, mind-blowing, worth-blogging-about addition? Well, it was some Mo’ Effin’ Fun! Courtesy of a little workout group known as WRBD, this morning the consequences of our choices were rewards and gains instead of punishments. There were no victims, only victors! Rock crushed your scissors? Go crush some push-ups! Scissors cut your paper? Plank it off. Paper beat your rock? Awesome! Cause, nothing beats sweating your heart out with this tribe of fun–loving, fitness fanatics! ... or is it fitness-loving, fun fanatics? By: Tywon Thompson I LOVE my tribe!
The past three Wednesday morning workouts have been nothing but EPIC. We Run Big D has completely outdone itself. Two Wednesdays ago, team workouts were incorporated into the session, which allowed the tribe to actually get to know one another. Since then, the strong implementation of partner workouts have been working like a charm. Last Wednesday's workout was nothing but "ballsy". Multiple tennis balls with different workouts on them! Wtf?! So crazy! Leaving everything up to chance, you reach down, grab a ball, and hope you didn't get "Jumpee Up the Hill", or "Burpees", but that's the beauty of it. If you got it, you did it. Loved it! The enthusiasm presented during Wednesday morning workouts, for sure carry over to the Friday morning Hill repeats. I know there are multiple groups out there that enjoy being together just as much as ours. However, let me be biased and say that WRBD does it on another level. We get excited about running hill repeats. Who does that?!?! The mofos of A Tribe Called "We Run Big D". That's who! We pump up the music and have at it. Making the hill ours! This Wednesday, was DOPE! The tribe is building a "fitness movement" community. The key word being "community". People in a community tend to come together in support of one another. Today was just that. Anyone, old and new of the tribe, saw the evidence in that. My heart smiled today, even bigger than it normally does. Today, a new comer won the challenge, and the entire tribe went into an uproar! THAT is community! Building confidence and being genuinely proud of another person's success! All fitness levels. All backgrounds. All ages. All people. That's my WRBD... #ilovemytribe Let's go!!! Sunrise means... By: Victoria Hernandez Sunrise 6K means #texansdoitbetter aka #np_pledgetakeover
The weather was cool, but not too cool. The air was crisp. A small gust of wind. *Gentle music begins.* I wake up. It’s race day. I get dressed, kiss Mr. Kitty bye and carry on my wayward soul to Margaret Hunt Bridge. As I’m driving up the road I see cars everywhere. Exponentially more than normal for our typical Friday spot. The hype grows within. I get my bib and join everyone at the start where the bounce is coming soon. I see some old friends, and new. Hugs all around. Seeing so many smiling faces this early in the morning could make anyone’s day. Voices cry out and seconds later the race starts. I follow the crowd. I certainly don’t belong in the front, but I ain’t walking either. I try to start off slow and pace myself, yet my competitive nature takes over. I’m running at what I think is a 10-minute pace, keeping up with a group of people. I’m wrong. So wrong. My tiredness creeps up on me. (I didn’t take pre-workout before the race because the last two times that i did take pre-workout before a workout ended up with a lot of gagging and spit up. Yuck, I know.) I slow down and and let others pass. I’m still not last. And honestly, that’s all I *really* care about anyway, for the time being. I also want to mention that trail running, which is kinda what this was, isn’t my thing. At all. I try to stick to pavement. It’s predictable. Nothing to trip over, normally. It’s still outside in the fresh air, and not on the dreadmill...I digress. Where the heck is the turnaround point! The fastest runners keep going forever forward. No one has come back from the turnaround point. Just going, and going, and going. I’m thinking to myself, these-people-should-be-running-back-toward-me-by-now-and-they-definitely-are-not-and-that-concerns-me-and-I-just-want-to-turn-around-and-eat. Finally, at a distance, I see what looks like someone coming toward me. Yes, people have turned around. Praise Jesus! As I keep trekking I see the actual point up ahead. My heart skips a beat. I turn back and pick up my pace a bit. I look up to the left to see the Dallas skyline. It’s actually kinda beautiful. Being from Houston I tend to be super biased and grew up anti-Dallas. But this place has grown on me. These people have take me in, making me feel like I belong here. (I know, tears, right?) So I keep running. Jax is my personal pacer. We make our way toward the bridge, slowly building up speed. I accelerate across the bridge. And at the downhill I build up more speed. Faster. Faster. Faster. I sprint through the end into a crowd of people cheering. It wasn’t quite the same feeling as finishing my marathon, but it was still fucking sweet. I have a huge shit-eating grin on my face as I’m handed my finisher’s medal - a bagel (one of my fav’s)! I felt bad that I had to leave early, missing out on all the photo-ops, but work calls. Besides, I know I’ll see everyone on Wednesday anyway. |
